Our goal is to be the leading independent publisher of quality audio, digital and print journalism in the country, and to deliver insightful coverage to readers who invest in news they can trust. We are looking for someone to join our team and help us deliver on this highly important mission, with a focus on generating paid subscriber growth.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Schwartz Media is hiring a Lead, New Subscriber Growth to join The Saturday Paper, The Monthly and 7am. This is a critical position, and we are seeking someone who is experienced in managing and driving audience-growth strategies to increase subscriptions and across all channels. We are seeking someone with three to four years’ professional experience who is ambitious to do the best work of their career. This is not a management role; it's a key delivery position.

The successful candidate will report to the Chief Product Officer and will be responsible for developing and executing data-driven acquisition activity both at the campaign and ongoing level that generates new subscriber growth for our titles as well as converts non-transactional consumers into long-term paid subscribers.

Working closely with our Chief Product Officer, the successful candidate will identify suitable campaign-driven opportunities to bring new customers and readers to our portfolio, as well as designing and executing highly targeted campaigns that convert the hundreds of thousands of people who consume our journalism every month into regular, paid subscribers.

The ideal candidate will be highly curious and comfortable working with data, and will embrace experimentation and hypothesis-driven thinking and testing. Our goal is to grow our subscription business as the bedrock of increased investment in journalism and the telling of important stories. This role is a key part of providing both the audiences and the resource to continue to build our journalism and give our writers a louder voice.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Ownership of reader acquisition campaigns and execution of project components to ensure delivery on audience growth goals.
  • Lead and build data and conversion reporting efforts across the business, focused on the attraction of new subscriber flow and conversion of non-transactional customers into paid subscribers.
  • Ownership and lead usage of our customer data engine and paywall technology, building user journeys and messaging/pricing/delivery context to engage new customers.
  • Working alongside our Lead, Brand in developing and providing quality assurance for all communications and marketing collateral.
  • Developing and managing Schwartz Media's external subscription growth campaign advertising schedule across all media, and providing campaign evaluation reports.
  • Budget and resourcing management.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across different functions, such as editorial, design and technology, to ensure optimal execution of subscription marketing activities.
  • Tracking the ROI of campaigns, analysing data to provide and distribute insights – including trends, performance, competitive and growth opportunities – through post-campaign reports.
  • Reviewing analytics, sales and performance and campaign data to find ways to optimise and innovate.
  • Finding effective ways to connect our journalism and stories to people across Australia who will value the work we do and become long-term subscribers.

PERSONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three to four years’ experience building impactful subscriber or direct-to-consumer marketing campaigns for a digital or subscription product.
  • Strategic ability that converts into high-efficacy execution.
  • Understanding of modern consumer behaviour drivers in subscriptions and media consumption.
  • Proven experience in customer journey mapping, campaign testing and marketing budget management.
  • Understanding of ad formats, segmentation, audiences and emerging trends in paid media and performance marketing.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to multitask and work well within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, adjusting priorities without compromising attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Objectivity and the ability to manage and prioritise competing demands.
  • Knowledge of CRM campaign management systems and previous ownership of digital end-to-end campaigns.
  • Experience in customer journey software is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Ability to think analytically and creatively to generate ideas, showing a proven record for initiative.
  • Highly curious and excited about experimentation and hypothesis-driven problem-solving.
